The Keeper Story

Keeper’s beginnings can be traced back to when Ben Stein worked as the CFO of Mira, a tech startup. There, he was responsible for all financial operations, from bookkeeping to board reporting.

What he found was a system riddled with inefficiencies. And it wasn’t a "Ben problem," or a company-specific problem… It was a universal problem.

The month-end process involved back-and-forth emails, clunky spreadsheets, and approximately 79 open browser tabs. Ben even resorted to printing out P&Ls and scribbling notes in the margin just to keep things organized. He was convinced there had to be a better way, but… there wasn’t.

Enter: Kenny Song

Like so many other legendary stories of friendship, Ben and Kenny met in college. More specifically, Pardee Tower on USC’s campus.

Fast forward a few years to the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Ben decided to build the tool he would have wanted as an accountant, but he needed a talented developer. Luckily, he knew exactly where to look.

All it took was a phone call that Ben opened with “Hey, Kenny, wanna build a startup?"

Kenny didn't hesitate.

The Building Begins

Within weeks, the two of them were posted up in Ben’s parents’ basement, where rent was free, distractions were minimal, and the focus was singular: build an app that bookkeepers would actually enjoy using. They knew they were onto something, but taking an idea and turning it into a full-fledged software is no small feat.

Keeper got its first big break after joining the Summer 2021 cohort of the Y Combinator accelerator program—which gave Ben and Kenny the resources and momentum they needed to bring this vision to life. By the end of the program, they had raised enough funding to leave the basement behind and set up the first Keeper “office” in Austin, Texas.

This? No, this wasn’t our office.

Ours was still a living room at this point.

But this AI-generated one is nice to look at.

During those early days of developing and improving Keeper, Ben and Kenny spent countless hours speaking with bookkeeping and accounting firms, understanding their pain points and uncovering what they needed most in a practice management solution.

Turns out, Ben’s experiences as a CFO were not unique. But unlike Ben, these firms weren’t just running one chaotic month-end close at a time. They were managing dozens (or even hundreds!)

Your Pain Points = Our Roadmap

These conversations became the foundation for Keeper’s product roadmap. Every feature we’ve built—and continue to build—can be traced back to the real-world challenges our customers ask us to fix.

Where we’re at, and where we’re headed

Keeper welcomed its first customer onto the app on February 8, 2021. Since then, it has grown into a practice management platform trusted by thousands of firms across the globe.

And while the app itself has evolved, our approach hasn’t. We still work alongside our customers, learning from their feedback and shipping new features weekly based on what they actually need.

As we continue to grow and expand our suite of tools, our goal in 2025 and beyond is still to automate accounting work to make accountants’ lives easier.

That’s it. That’s our north star.
